Year 10 students Jack Stader, Harry Jorgensen, Littisha Varghese and Hayley Duffy are part of the St Vincent de Paul’s representative group for the school.
After absorbing the devastating news about the recent earthquakes in Nepal, they wanted to do something about it.
Hayley said they came up with a simple and timely plan.
“We asked people to wear beanies and scarfs and bring a gold coin donation (to wear) the beanies and scarfs. And we also made some pumpkin soup,” she said.
“And they had to wear it in the Nepalese colours,” Littisha said.
“We did it with short notice. We only had one day of awareness that we were actually having the fundraiser.”
Hayley said the next day, whether they wore beanies or not, contributions poured in. The group was grateful to the school community for their support.
School principal Jillian Rainger said there are several times during the year when students raise funds for a need. Earlier this year, the students raised $2000 for the Caritas Project Compassion to establish sustainable food production for impoverished populations.
Harry said any secondary student was welcome to brainstorm new ideas.
