It is the first time in 11 years Ross Hill has come so far in a knockout tournament.
They will play at Homebush on September 14, and player Georgia Ditchfield hoped they might play on the same court as the national team.
“I’m going to kiss the court! Take a selfie!” Georgia Ditichfield whooped with glee.
The Ross Hill girls bested Tamworth South 34-31 in overtime on August 11 to capture the North West grand final crown in Armidale.
By all accounts, it was a game of reckoning. The team agreed Tamworth presented a very aggressive game, and Ross Hill had to burrow within themselves to find the confidence to respond.
“Elloise was getting pushed out of the circle,” Georgia said.
“They wanted to win. They didn’t really care if they contacted, they just went,” Charlotte Mozzell said.
“We were kind of losing in the first bit, and in the second bit, it was like, ‘Oh my god, we’re winning’,” Georgia grinned.
Vicci said with the team down 17-6 at half-time, she decided to move the girls around.
It was a recipe for success and the Ross Hill baskets started coming.
“Then at the third quarter time, we were only down by four and the whole team just changed; it’s like they clicked,” Vicci said.
The full-time whistle blew with 23-all, and the young women kept up a strategy to close the game with a victory.
“Elloise would run into the centre and the third, get the ball, pass it to Amiel and Amiel would pass it to Georgia,” Piper Cribb said.
“It was awful, the pressure on you being shooter,” Elloise Neville recalled.
“Awful! And then we won and I look at Maiya, and she’s just got this huge smile on her face.”
“She just ran over and like, jumped on me in excitement,” Maiya Beveridge laughed.
Vicci felt very proud of her girls and the effort they made when put into new positions.
“They all showed great confidence in what ever position they were thrown at,” Vicci said with a smile.
