Five mammoth poppies now reside on the Otho and Henderson Streets roundabout in the lead up to January’s 2016 Kurrajong Re-enactment March. 

The march committee president Kim Blomfield, vice-president Ann Hodgens, and Inverell Tourism manager Peter Caddey gathered at the roundabout to watch the installation take place on Tuesday morning.

“Whilst we’ve been standing here, the reactions of the drivers driving around the roundabout and their passengers, has just been fantastic,” Kim said.

“We’ve even heard children yelling out, ‘Look at the flowers!’”

There is one poppy larger than the rest, symbolic of the one in five men who did not return from the Great War.

Peter felt the poppies would evoke thought from passers-by.

“From the amount of onlookers we’ve seen so far this morning, in the amount of time it’s been up, I think it’s going to be a real attraction,” he said.

The flowers were inspired by the massive Melbourne installation of red blooms at for the Centenary of ANZAC, and they were fabricated by two local men who asked to remain anonymous.

The committee has been working toward the imminent event for over two years, and Ann was visibly moved by the installation.

You know, two years of hard work in trying to do what we could do to remember these men, now it’s starting to come to fruition,” she said.

“Very excited. This is the beginning.”
