Sergeant Major Flora Sander’s visit 1920:This photo was sent in by Flora Rainger a resident of McLean Village and features herself in the arms of quite a famous figure of the time. Sergeant Major Flora Sanders. Flora Rainger tells us (to the best of her knowledge) the Sergeant Major was renowned as the only British woman in the Serbian army. She had attended finishing school in Germany. When World War I broke out she went to Serbia as a nurse but soon joined the Serbian Army in which she fought as a soldier and was promoted in the field. Her Russian husband Uri Urenditch died in a German concentration camp during the war and she escaped to South Africa before returning to England. In 1920 she came to Australia to raise money for the Red Cross. The photo was taken at Mayfield, Oakwood where Flora visited her sister Mary, the wife of John Jerrard Baker. Flora is holding her niece Flora Baker (now Rainger).

Farmers and Settlers, 1948: This photo was sent in to us by Peggy Crawford and features the attendees at the Farmers and Settler Association zone conference held in Inverell in 1948. Well known photographer George Devine took the photo at the Inverell Town Hall. The event was quite a formal affair as evidenced by the suit and tie dress code.

Delungra Rugby League: This photo was provided by John Shaw and features the Delungra rugby league team of 1963 photographed at Glen Innes Showgrounds. The team played in the Group 5 second division competition with teams from Warialda Rail, Glen Innes, Inverell, Tingha, Bundarra and Gilgai.
