Bradley Craig Mottram remains in custody in a Sydney prison and did not appear in Armidale Local Court on Wednesday when the case was briefly mentioned.
He's facing one count of murder after he allegedly stabbed his 51-year-old mother, Simone Mottram, on October 19 in Inverell.
A solicitor for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) said more time was needed to serve outstanding items in the brief of evidence.
"There is some further material," the DPP told the court, adding it would be served soon. The DPP said the items would be served on Mottram's solicitor, who was not in court for the mention, but foreshadowed a paper committal on the next occasion the matter returns to court.
A paper committal, or signed waiver of committal hearing, would see the murder case head straight to trial after an arraignment in the Supreme Court in Sydney.
"It's the Crown application for an adjournment to May for a paper committal," the DPP solicitor said.
"With the view to having an arraignment in the Supreme Court on the first of July."
Magistrate Michael Holmes granted the adjournment to May, ordering a committal on the next occasion.
"He's in custody and he's not called," Mr Holmes said.
"Bail not applied for, bail refused."
Police allege the 19-year-old stabbed his mother several times in her Froude St home, before her body was found by police and paramedics.
The discovery was made after police found the teenage son on Copeton Dam Road, more than 30 minutes away from the home.
He had crashed his mother's red Hyundai Getz down an embankment on a straight stretch of road.
In December, the court heard that several exhibits including blood-soaked items seized from two crime scenes had been sent to a laboratory for forensic testing.
