The trio were part of a fundraiser for a charity that supports Australian soldiers who may struggle mentally, long after returning from their tours of duty.

A near-unprecedented level of military operations over the past 20 years has seen our soldiers involved in multiple overseas operations throughout their careers. Increased stress levels have dramatically impacted their mental health.

Walking Wounded is Brisbane based, mostly run by veterans and volunteers, and aims to engage, assist and refer young veterans and the families of the fallen to the help and relationships they need.

The marathon was set down to be completed by Anzac Day, so Julie Johnson, Jaymie Brown and Murray Stewart set off the day before to down the distance in one hit. “The challenge was to walk 42 kilometres,” Julie said.

“We’ve been supporting a different charity every month this year. Murray and I competed in Gosford last week in a battlefield mud run to support autism.” She said they participate in the events just to help out, and for the sake of completing the challenges.

“It’s a good deed and a good way to keep healthy and fit too,” Jaymie said. 

“There’s a beer at the end at the Graman pub, and we’re looking forward to it,” she said.
