Inverell RSL is likely to be the first branch in NSW and possibly Australia to organise a commemoration specifically for veterans of modern conflict, when it holds a new service this coming weekend. Local RSL sub-branch honorary secretary Graeme Clinch said the event will pay tribute to veterans who have served and fought in conflicts, peacekeeping and peacemaking missions since the Vietnam War.

Naval veteran and Inverell resident, Anthony Worgan, will be among those participating. The 34-year-old served in the Persian Gulf and along Australia’s northern border as an engineering crew member with the Royal Australian Navy between 2003 to 2010.
“Whether we think war is right or wrong there are still people [fighting] and protecting lives,” Mr Worgan said. “I think it’s important we recognise the veterans [and] it’s important especially for kids to know that they are able to live the life they can because there are people protecting that.”
Mr Worgan said his experiences differed greatly from those who served in other branches of the Australian Defense Force, especially the army: “I wasn’t a digger, I was out at sea.”
As a submariner, technology meant his battles could sometimes be fought at a distance, although dangers like mines still had to be managed. But as a patrol boat officer, Mr Worgan went straight to the front line of border security, saving people on board the dangerous vessels used by illegal people smugglers.
Although the nature of contemporary warfare has changed the experience of conflict for many veterans, Mr Worgan said there is still an instant sense of camaraderie with the old RSL veterans.
“There’s an understanding of where we’ve all been and that we’ve done what we believe is right,” he said.
Some of those older vets will join Mr Worgan, and others from the latest generation of veterans at the commemoration this Saturday, September 9. The service will be held at centotaph opposite the RSM Club from 4.30pm. Returned service people and their families, including children, are encouraged to attend.
