The Bonshaw Hall Committee, a main stay of Bonshaw community activities and development, hosted a visit from Inverell Shire Council earlier this week, with both parties declaring the meeting a success.
Committee secretary, Michelle Ramsay says Inverell Shire Council’s Mayor, Councillor Kate Dight, General Manager and Director of Corporate Services attended to discuss plans for the year ahead.
Inverell Shire Council mayor Paul Harmon says the annual visit provides the ideal platform to meet residents, tour the Shire’s villages and also discuss local issues.
“We thank the residents for coming along and sharing their thoughts on how Council can assist with improving the village and also help the Bonshaw community thrive”.
“It was certainly a very positive discussion and the community had some very constructive ways Council can assist with issues such as road safety, improving facilities at the hall and also enhancing the main street and entrances to the village”.

Cr Harmon confirmed an avenue of trees will be planted along the main street of Bonshaw and a community noticeboard will also be constructed.
“Bonshaw is also to have entrance signage installed over the next 6 months and the Committee has been on the front foot surveying residents to identify themes and develop a design for the signage”.
Input from the community indicates the sign will reflect Bonshaw’s landscape, the Dumaresq River valley and highly productive farmland. The final design will be selected by the community.
Cr Harmon says discussions also encompassed Council’s role in advocating for government funding for high ticket issues such as access to the Bonshaw Weir crossing during heavy rainfall and improving mobile phone coverage.

“During wet times, the Bonshaw weir crossing is submerged on the New South Wales side for lengthy periods, which causes headaches for travellers, families and transport of farm freight, which impacts on the bottom line”.
“Council is continuing to lobby the state government on these issues and we’re working with Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall to identify a solution”.
A full report from the Bonshaw meeting will be presented to the next Council meeting on Wednesday 27 June.
