“We invited ladies from the support group to come along on the day. We had about six of them attend who had never really watched AFL before and they really enjoyed that,” Bird said. “I think we had about 26 ladies play in the ladies game prior to the main game. It was a good bit of entertainment and they all had a lovely time.”
All the funds were raised through gold coin donations at the gate, a raffle and sponsorship by the players who wore pink socks on the day.
“We were very excited about the $2000,” Bird said.
“Saints is a very small club, and so any support we get is greatly appreciated.
“For a club of our size to raise that much was very, very exciting. We’re very happy with that.
“We’re really quite excited to be able to donate back to a local cause. Speaking to the ladies we were surprised by how many people it affects and how many people they support.”
President of the Inverell Breast Cancer Support Group, Jan O’Neill, said the members of the group had a fantastic day.
“$2000 for going to watch a match that we all thoroughly enjoyed, beautiful food, sitting in the sunshine and free champagne all afternoon, it was just amazing,” O’Neill said.
She said to begin with the group was not too sure about what was happening and were constantly asking ‘Can he do that?’, but she said towards the end of the match they had become used to the rules and the fact that the Saints defeated the Nomads on the day was a bonus too.
“Whenever they play here we’re going to be there,” O’Neill said.
“Now I think they think we’re their good luck doodads. It was just amazing honestly.”
Jenifer Bird and her girls just did a wonderful, wonderful job.”
O’Neill said the funds would give local people who need help with cancer a hand up.
