It was anchors aweigh and more sail for Inverell Police this week as sea-faring mateys and local officers took to the perilous waters of Copeton Dam aboard their fine new vessel of policing infamy the HMAS New Addition.
Helmsman Hamish Brown lowered the gangway to board buccaneers and conscripts for the maiden voyage of the new Inverell police boat under the stern command of Captain Rowan ‘Pry Bar’ O’Brien.
Wobbly-legged seadog Pulse scuttled on board for a taste of life in the open water and after some initial Yo-ho-ho-ing it was all ahead full to test-drive the sturdy police vessel following recent purchase.
The able boat was fitted out with the finest technological rigging and joined the Inverell Police fleet this week, now rivalling the likes of the East India Trading Company on land and water.
The voyage was capped with fine trade winds leaving captain and crew in high spirits on the hunt for buried treasure and pirate booty near Barefoot Alley.
Captain Pry Bar kept good ship with plenty of firm orders to forestall mutiny and not a crew member did question his command ‘til a gust of burly breeze tipped his Captain’s hat overboard.
Orders were hollered to bring-‘er-about and lower the long boats to retrieve the Captain’s cap and restore balance aboard the fledgling vessel.
Mutiny was brewing among the able seamen aboard and crewman Pulse was tossing up chances with the sharks and really big catfish should onboard conditions turn to pot as Captain O’Brien fished about for his bobbing hat.
In the end authority was restored as the Captain pulled his lofty authority from the sea and the New Addition returned to port with many a fine sea yarn to be told.
