All those trees and material that came down the river from Elsmore and up towards Paradise. In October of 1990 there was a wind storm that went up the river and knocked down a lot of willow trees.
The Inverell Shire started to clean the river out above the Elsmore bridge but were stopped by the Water Commission, so the job was never finished.
The big flood in 1991 was on February 7, 1991, it rained all night on February 6 and it was still raining on February 7 up in the area of Maybol, they had 17 inches of rain.
Ray Mepham who lives on the river rang up saying there was a mighty flood coming towards Inverell, the flood picked up all the material from Elsmore and came down to Inverell. It knocked down the old suspension Bridge etc and spilled out all over the town and caused a lot of damage.
But since 1991 there was a committee formed to clean up the river from the Tingha bridge to the railway bridge and with the help of many people with trucks, excavators, dozers and Inverell Shire it was cleaned up.
But now, since 1991, there are a lot of big buildings right along the river. It will be interesting to see where the water will go.
As far as putting more trees up the main street, it is ludicrous, it is good the way it is.
If Inverell Shire wants to do something for the town then help fix the burnt out building in Otho Street and the vacant lot across the road where the old Black & Green bar was this would help the town more.
