NSW Greens MP John Kaye MLC organised the event to raise awareness of state government cuts to TAFE and the Smart and Skilled reforms and fee rises he felt limited education choices within campuses.
“Our concern is that this is a high unemployment pathway that the Baird government is embarked on,” Mr Kaye said.
Mr Kaye plans to meet with staff and students during the rally to discuss the issues and how to raise community awareness of the trouble for TAFE.
Relieving TAFE New England director Lyn Rickard responded to news of the rally by saying TAFE New England’s Inverell Campus is open for business, with vacancies in some of their semester 2 programs.
“We know that having the skills to address the needs of any workforce is critically important,” Ms Rickard said.
“We are working with the Inverell community and other communities across the New England and North West region to identify the skills individuals and businesses need to ensure their success now and into the future.”
