Organiser Jono Elphick said the show society had hoped to run the event for some time, but lacked the resources until recently.
“It’s not a cheap exercise to get off the ground, but thankfully this year we’ve got some really good sponsors which has helped,” he said.
Woodchopping hopefuls will have nine events to choose from, and can compete on their own or as part of a two-man team.
“It’ll range from the standing block, as they call it, to the tree climb and then there’ll also be a two handed saw event,” Jono said.
“It’s quite entertaining. It’s quite a physical sport and a technical one also.
“I guess it’s an old-time show event.”
He was sure Inverell audiences would enjoy the spectacle.
“There’s a bit of action in it, that keeps people into it, enthralled in what they’re watching,” he said.
“It was needed at the show, I think.”
Co-organiser and former axeman Larry McPherson said with ageing competitors, most woodchoppers struggle to match the speeds set by old-timers.
“In my day, a 13-inch block, an average cutter would cut it in about 36 seconds.
A champion cutter would probably cut it in 26 seconds, but these days it would probably be well over a minute,” he said.

“The woodchoppers are getting older, there’s not many young fellas starting in wood chopping,” he added.
For those hoping to try their strength, Larry had some advice.
“Learn how to chop first! They won’t accept anyone that’s not accredited,” he said.
“You’ve got to actually say you can chop a block off,” he said.
“If you can’t cut there’s no use going in it.”
