The Compass for Life survey, which involved 1000 Australian adults and 518 adolescents found that those involved in sporting clubs and gyms scored higher on positive emotions, a sense of accomplishment, overall wellbeing and health.
According to the survey, around 36% of children aged 13-17 regularly take part in sporting clubs or fitness activities. Adolescents who rarely or never participated scored significantly lower on several measures of wellbeing.
The survey used the PERMA-profiler tool to measure psychological wellbeing. It focused on positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishment and included a range of behavioural and social media questions.
