The funds will go towards purchasing automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) for the towns’ sporting fields. After hearing of a young woman suffering a heart attack on a hockey field in Taree, the council were already considering purchasing one for the town before hearing of the Lions’ project.
“If it saves a life, it’s a brilliant. If we don’t have to use it, it’s even better,” Sports Council president Kerry Stafford said. “They do a lot for the community, and if we can help in any small way, it’s a big plus.” Lions member Rick Lange said the club was surprised by how strong the support was for the project.
“That’s something about Inverell. Most people here are very community-minded. They give a lot, this community,” he said. Rick is all too aware of the importance of defibrillators, after the equipment saved his life following a heart attack more than a year ago.
“For just a small thing, they can make such a huge difference,” he said.
The Lions are now gearing up for their major Kickstart for Sports fundraiser, a twilight bowls night on at the Inverell East Bowling Club on Friday, March 3 from 6pm. Organiser Kim Mangano was thrilled to see so many local businesses pitch in, with over 70 prizes up for grabs in the raffle.
Currently around 60 teams have signed up for the night, a number the Lions hope to double. To take part, call bowls co-ordinator Dave Curtis on 0403 638 607.
