In 1978 JE Starr’s sons Keith and Fred purchased stud females from Yarram Park in Victoria and Invernaion in Queensland and registered the Foxforth prefix.
Today, Foxforth Herefords, “Foxforth” Bagot Road Tubbamurra, is jointly run by Fred and his daughter Anne.
The commercial focus of the herd is very strong with milk, temperament, and carcase characteristics being used as the main selection criteria, Anne Starr said.
“Our cattle must have good fat cover and an easy doing ability to survive the harsh winter months,” she said.
“Commercial steers are sold to Whyalla Feedlot at Texas each year.
“Feedback on the steers in the feedlot and at the processing plant is taken into consideration for the next year’s breeding program.”
The Starrs also produce black baldy cross Charolais calves sold as vealers at eight to 10 months of age that dress out at 190-200kg.
These calves are supplied to a processor in Victoria for the restaurant trade in Melbourne.
