The third annual reunion of Inverell players, many of whom were Swans back in the day, is more than just a chance for old mates to reconnect, it’s also a fundraiser for the More Than Awareness organisation.
The A Graders will be wearing specially designed jumpers to mark the occasion and they will be auctioned before the big game. Seventeen local sponsors have generously lined up to support the event. A few of the old guard will be putting their heads together to select the Hawks’ player of the day, who will be the recipient of the prestigious Terry Trim Medal, and a dinner will be held back at the RSM Club in the evening.
Former players will be travelling from far afield to catch up with old team-mates and supporters and organisers are expecting to see the likes of former Newcastle Knight and State of Origin player Robbie McCormack and his father Johnny, an ex-president of the club, on the sideline among a number of club stalwarts such as Doug Goldman, shire councillor Stuart Berryman, a Hawks Juniors premiership winner Chris Bailey, Terry Trim’s good mate Paul Ehsman and a quality collection of old fellas from the late '50s and early '60s.
As organiser Paddy Miller pointed out, it’s a big day for the town and the rugby league community.
“It’s a great chance for the club’s veterans to get together.
“For some of these blokes it’s the only game they’ll get to all year. So it’s a chance to make a real day of it, a really good social outing where people can reconnect, talk about old times and reinforce that sense of belonging to the club and its history.”
“It’s also an opportunity for the younger blokes to realise that they are part of a club that has a tradition.”
With funds raised by the Inverell Hawks Old Boys day, More Than Awareness will deliver training and education to players and people involved with other football codes and sporting organisations in the town to improve knowledge, skills and confidence around mental health and suicide prevention.
The day will start with the Under 18s taking on Narrabri at noon, the Ladies league Tag at 1.15, the Presidents Cup will kick off at 2.15, before the A Graders take to the field at 3.45pm.
