Jackson Aaron Buchanan is facing three charges stemming for an alleged altercation at an Arthur St house in Inverell.
Police were called to the property after a reports of a stabbing at about 10.30pm.
A 24-year-old man was found with a stab wound to his stomach. He was initially taken by ambulance to Inverell hospital before being transported to Armidale hospital for specialist treatment.
Police said the injury was not considered to be life-threatening but he remained in hospital on Thursday.
Following investigations, Buchanan, also aged 24, was arrested a short time later in Short Street.
He was taken to Inverell Police Station and questioned by detectives and later charged with malicious wounding, breaching an apprehended violence order (AVO) and armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.
Buchanan was refused bail by police and spent the night in custody before he appeared in Inverell Local Court on Thursday morning.
Defence solicitor Brodie Verri told the court her client was vulnerable, and indicated he would plead not guilty.
Ms Verri lodged an application for bail, and said her client could abide by a number of conditions, including that he live with a family member in Gilgai.
Magistrate Megan Greenwood said there appeared to be a “strong case” against Mr Buchanan despite his intention to fight the charges.
Ms Greenwood said she had to refused bail because of the seriousness of the charges and that he was already on a suspended sentence for a domestic violence matter. She also said he had a history of non-compliance with court orders.
Buchanan was ordered to remain in custody until the case returns to court again in September. Investigations continue, police said.
