The Inverell rider made his debut in the squad in France’s Tour of Alsace on Wednesday, where he took on the 4.7km time trial in Sausheim.
“I am very excited,” he said.
“It's the first time I have raced with them and will be a great experience and opportunity.”
Sunderland was invited by national coach James Victor to join the five day tour on Sunday. Known for his strength as a climber, Sunderland was a natural choice for the mountainous terrain. Parts of the course have been used in the Tour de France.
He joined fellow climbers Jai Hindley and Lucas Hamilton.
“Being selected to race with the team is a good indication that this year has been progressing really well for me. I'm excited to race and progress even more,” Sunderland said.
His role on the team focuses on supporting other riders in the overall classification during the race, but Sunderland said he would also looking for personal opportunities to shine.
The five day tour includes a 148km from Velleminfroy to the Planche des Belles Filles, 144km from Belfort to Blotzheim, 165km Ribeauvillé to Lac Blanc and finally Sunday’s 146km Neuf-Brisach to Dannemarie stage.
