Starting in 1981, Kancho Lim first began teaching his free martial arts style – a mixture of taekwondo, karate, aikido and jiu jitsu – to just seven students in Melbourne. Working as an industrial chemist, he taught for free, with the students simply paying for the hall’s hire.
Today, Kancho Lim is a 7th Dan of the World Kumite Association and has been inducted in the Australasian Martial Arts Hall of fame.
The style has grown in popularity, with over 66 black belts in Melbourne. After eight years of training, local Brayden Barnewell was thrilled to join the prestigious ranks, and received his senior black belt on Tuesday night. The young martial artist gave a demonstration of his advanced skills.
Loong Fu Pai Martial Arts is the first NSW dojo for the style. Kancho Lim said he was pleased to pass on his legacy through Dai Sensei Shane Coggins.
“I tried to get him to start teaching long before he came to Inverell because I know his quality,” Kancho Lim said.
“Shane is among the top six or at the most top eight best instructors in my style.”
Dai Sensei Coggins said it was a great honour to form his own school after 18 years practicing the style.
He said he loved the camaraderie and family atmosphere encouraged in Loong Fu Pai and its focus on self defence.
Loong Fu Pai runs out of Inverell’s Masonic Hall. Lesson prices vary, with the first trial class free. To learn more, call Dai Sensei Coggins on 0402 270 967.
