A burgeoning fashion designer, Amber has left a legacy at the school. She raised $1500 for her year 12 charity, the Cerebral Palsy Alliance, by selling clothes with her unique logo design.
It’s a cause close to her heart, as Amber has cerebral palsy herself.
“The CP Alliance has been in Amber’s life since she was six weeks old,” her mother Angela Dennis said.
“It’s been a big part of her life. So anything that Amber can give back to the CP Alliance she is more than happy to do.”
Angela said that the Alliance has been “a wonderful support” for her family, who were grateful to have access to the organisation while living in the country.
While she had few words to say, the beaming smile on Amber’s face told the story when she watched several classmates and teachers with jumpers, hats and aprons bearing her logo – the letter ‘A’ surrounded by a flower wreath.
The design has reached even further than the school, with the Nurture One George Street Children’s Centre community, McLean Care staff, Inverell East Rotary and Warialda Garden Club members all proud owners of their own ‘Designs by Amber’ pieces.
Teacher’s aide Amanda Dean, who’s been by Amber’s side for the past six years, was overflowing with pride. When Amber was first assigned to create a design and technology major project, it was Amanda who encouraged her to make the most of the opportunity.
“I wanted her to have something to show other kids and inspire kids that if you just try hard and have a dream, dreams can come true,” she said.
“It doesn’t matter what challenge is thrown at her, she will always try. She always has a positive attitude. We’ve always been a part of everything - swimming carnivals, athletic days, sporting events.”
Although Amber’s condition brought many challenges, Angela said both Ross Hill Public and Inverell High School were “amazing and fantastic” and did whatever was necessary to give her access to mainstream classes.
It’s just the beginning for Amber, who’s keen to continue her new business venture after school. She will continue taking orders through the email address designsbyamberd@outlook.com.
