The Town Centre Renewal Plan for Otho Street, including its controversial removal of Plane trees, received a financial boost when Inverell Shire Council voted to inject a further $703,000 into the project.

The money represents savings and unspent funds gathered from other projects under the Council’s Urban Works program.
Voting at last week’s September council meeting authorised the redirection of these funds, despite Crs Mal Peters and Neil McCosker opposing the motion.
The decision follows a revision of costs associated with the Otho St treatment in which the removal, repairs to infrastructure and replacement of nine remaining plane trees is estimated to reach $144,000.
An estimated break down of total costs associated with implementing plans for the street are: construction of a centre median strip (that will include new tree plantings) $472,500; the purchase and planting of Pin Oak trees in the median strip $40,000; replacement edge plantings $15,000; removal of plane trees and remediation of sites $144,000; and a contingency allowance of $30,000. Overall estimate $701,500.
