The local team won the right to host the event in town after winning last year’s games, alongside the South Inverell Bear Eaters, with over 17, 000 points.
A tight finish, Port Macquarie’s Werin Elders took home the shield, with Gomeroi United coming second.
Pops of colour filled Varley Oval as 30 teams and over 200 people visited for the games. The Bear Eaters stood out in blue and purple while Gomeroi United sported shirts covered in traditional dot paintings.
“It’s a good opportunity for Inverell and for the elders that haven’t seen anything like this before,” Miranda Binge said. She was proud to share the special event with the town.
Ross Hill students welcomed visitors with traditional dances; the girls bright in the colours of the Aboriginal flag and the boys striking in white paint.
“That was a good thing, we’ve never seen that at an Olympics before,” Ms Binge said.
The elders started the day with a march, displaying their teams’ colours with unique and creative banners.
The Olympians tested their skills in quoits, netball and hockey. The local teams maintained their strong stats in the football. “Hopefully it’ll be bigger and better next year,” Ms Binge said.
