Both Warialda teams are sitting in the top four of their respective competitions and in the men’s the Wombats were tipped as favourites to take out the division before a ball was kicked this year.
The Tenterfield men went down 24-22 but captain-coach Brendan Minns lauded the efforts of his side to match it with against a relentless Wombats outfit.
“Warialda came out firing, they were very physical in the first 10-15 minutes,” he said.
“It was some of the toughest footy we have played for quite some time.
“We went to the break at 12-all at half-time and we went into the sheds relatively happy. We completed a fair few sets, we were looking relatively good.
“Our shape and our structure was working pretty good, we had a fair few missed opportunities though.”
In the second session, the Wombats put points on the board first but Minns said his team maintained their composure.
“We scored some great tries through the middle. Our speed just left them but unfortunately our defence in the later part of the second-half left you wanting a little bit more,” he said.
“We were doing four good tackles and then they would bust a tackle.”
The Tigers head to Walcha to play the winless Roos.
In the league tag, the Tenterfield ladies missed out on a win, going down 20-12 against a firing Wombats team.
Coach Wayne Minns missed the match but Brendan said there were positives to take out of it.
“They weren't down by much at half-time and they looked good,” he said.
“I tipped them on a couple of little things, they just need to play a bit more structured footy.
“I spent a couple of training sessions with them and got them doing it but they do it at training and won't do it on the field.
“I think they need to work on that same stuff they are doing at training and bring it into the game.”
Wayne will be back at the helm this Saturday when the Tigers head to Walcha to play the second-placed Jillaroos.
Wet weather prevented the Tigers having their usual Monday night training session but he is hoping to have a full-strength team to take on Walcha.
“Still don't know, not having a run last night, I won't know until probably Wednesday night how the girls have all shaped up and finished up after the weekend,” he said.
“I understand there were no injuries or anything so hopefully going close to full-strength.”
