The Inverell Highlanders Club have been awarded the funding to reconstruct the rugby park’s perimeter fencing.
“This new fence will be great for the Club because it will allow us to hold more events and make the fields more multi-use for the entire community,” Highlanders president Roly King said.
He said construction will begin by August.
Member for the Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall was pleased to announce the grant, and said Rugby Park was not only home to the Highlanders, but was “a fantastic venue” well-used by a variety of sporting and community groups throughout the year.
“The outer perimeter fence has seen far better days and doesn’t provide much security for the venue,” Mr Marshall said.
“Thankfully the facility is much loved by locals and hasn’t as yet had any major security issues, but the new fence will provide that added level of assurance when other groups are using the venue.”
He noted that gate takings are also important for sporting clubs’ survival.
“While I’m sure many a country kid has tried to get over the fence at their local club, it’s important to the club that they are securing their takings which go directly towards the cost of maintaining the wonderful facilities here at Rugby Park,” Mr Marshall said.

“An up-to-standard fence make life just that little bit easier for the volunteers who keep our local sporting clubs going.”
Mr Marshall encouraged locals to watch the Highlanders take on the Tamworth Pirates in their last home game of the season on Saturday, August 11; a game which is doubling as a reunion match for the 2008 Highlanders Premiership winning team.
“2008 was the last Premiership for Inverell who won against 24-20 against the Pirates, who then went on to be undefeated in every final they’ve since contested,” Mr Marshall said.
“I am looking forward to getting out here for the last home game of the season and would encourage everyone, no matter which code you follow to get out and support the Highlanders.”
