The year 10 student stepped up to look after his younger classmates, earning the title of Grand Champion Herdsman for his efforts.
“I was the oldest in my team, so there’s a lot of people that were relying on me to keep them on task and making sure everyone knows what they’re doing, and (they’re) safe with the cattle,” Orrick said.
“I was helping them put on their leather halters, I was making sure that their beds were getting changed right, their neck collars were getting put on.”
Orrick also looked out for other teams, and helped anyone he saw struggling.
He was surprised to receive the Grand Champion prize, which is often awarded to older competitors.
“It’s a great achievement,” show team manager Amy Rawson said.
“We had nine kids, and out of that nine, four or five hadn’t been at a show before. So he was really stepping up helping them.”

Keen to pursue agribusiness after school, Orrick was an avid listener at the educational seminars.
Ms Rawson said the Pittsworth show was a good learning experience, and a worthwhile introduction for young novices to cattle shows.
“It’s one of those ones where you go back year after year because the kids have such a good time and the committee that runs it do a really good job,” she said.
She thanked Gum Flat’s Felicity and Graham Reeves for providing the loan cattle for the day, Jeffrey Hobday for transporting the animals and parents Scott Marshall and Robert Walters for their assistance.
