For second grade, an eleventh hour goal from Dan Hunter was a relief, securing the win against the DK Dads with a score of 3-2 after trailing for the entire game.
“We did it tough. We should have won a lot easier,” coach Kyle Chilcott said.
The locals found themselves on the back foot early on, with an early goal from the DK Dads. Inverell FC fought their way back into the game, finally scoring with a penalty kick towards the end of the first half.
The DK Dads were not done yet, and scored another goal early in the second half, which was again evened out by a penalty goal from Inverell.
The locals had possession for most of the game, but struggled to make the most of it until the final goal in extra time.
“I think everyone was a bit nervous, because after you miss a fair few good chances, all of a sudden the good chances become hard chances,” Chilcott said.
First grade were not so lucky, as TAS used the final 10 minutes to solidify their win, beating the locals with a painful score of 6-2.
Disciplinary action proved Inverell’s downfall, as Kyle King was sent off early on.
“There was a bit of a bad tackle on him and he retaliated and gave him a little kick in the ankles. There was very little in it,” Chilcott said.
After playing 40 minutes with 10 men, and with a score of 3-2, Inverell lost another player five minutes into the second half.
Captain Matthew Rose received his second yellow card for a late tackle. Chilcott felt the umpire was more strict than usual for the grand final game, but said Inverell needed to accept the result.
“He made his decision so you’ve got to respect that. You shouldn’t give him the opportunity to make that decision,” he said.
The locals came close to evening the score with 15 minutes to go, but missed their chance.
With Inverell out of gas, TAS made the most of the last 10 minutes, scoring another three goals.
