An informal event loosely organised by BEST Employment Corporate and Community Services Officer Michele Jedlicka, enthusiastic participation from a wide range of local organisations made for a morning to remember.
“It started out really slow and it just built momentum to today,” Michele said.
Over 120 people gathered for the festivities, which included ball games, a drum circle and a mouth watering barbecue.
“That was outstanding for a non-organised event. People just said ‘what shall I bring?’ and just showed up,” Michele said.
Inverell High students, Brighter Access and Connections participants walked through the streets with painted pebbles and cards to explain the purpose of the day and invite the community to come along.
“I wish more community members had come because part of today and the theme for this year centres on inclusion. I think the thing is that we all probably know someone with disability, but this was a time for people with disabilities to come together, to meet new people and also a chance for our community to meet other people that they may never usually meet - because we’re all just people,” Michele said.
“Some of the folks that I have met - and we all have varying abilities - are some of the best people I know.”
