The 2019 Sapphire Community and Distric Schools NAIDOC Week Art Competition was open to all primary schools around the district.
Organised by Louise Walburn and Christina Howard the competition opened up a discussion about NAIDOC Week and this year's theme: Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let's work together.
Louise was amazed at all entries submitted into the competition, which has now been running for three years.
"Schools obviously have to wait until the NAIDOC theme is announced but they've got 12 months to prepare for the annual event.
"Last year was an easier one for the kids being centred around women, but this year's theme is a bit more political."
Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 were able to enter mixed media into the competition, judged by artist Elenore Binge-Harrison and art teacher Nikiah Harris.
Judged in three ages- early stage one, stage two and stage three categories included individual, group, class and a new one this year- small schools.
A first, second and third place will be chosen by Elenore and Nikiah as well as an encouragement award and highly commended.
As sponsors Armajun Aboriginal Health Service, will supply winners with gift vouchers to purchase art supplies.
After judging the pieces on Tuesday, Elenore said she was taken away by the young imaginations at work.
"It's a higher standard this year. The artists statements capture the eyes as well. Some of these kids are quite intuitive for their age," she said.
"The more in depth concept has challenged these young students. I think the artworks without words speak the loudest and reach out more," Niki said.
The exhibition's opening night will be held on June 27 starting from 6pm at the Inverell Shire Public Library.
Light refreshments will be provided by Ross Hill Public School's P and C. The exhibit will remain available for viewing throughout the school holidays.
