The Adventures of Chook, Chick and Cackles What a Fright and Spa Day will be officially launched as the first two of five books at Inverell Shire Public Library on Saturday.
Fiona said the chooks were so expressive for animals without any face muscles, and thought they would make perfect drawing subjects.
"I only started writing in April. Because I have grandchildren, I started thinking about story lines they'd like and I could see the pictures in my head. I've got almost all illustrations done but the stories have been written for a while," she said.
Fiona read What a Fright and Spa Day to local children during story time at the library on Wednesday. Afterwards the youngsters crafted their own chook puppets out of paper plates.
Describing the order of the series, Fiona said First Flight would be the next book published. Mick the Magpie, a new character, teaches the girls how to fly. The fourth book Buster the Bully is about a nasty, young rooster who terrorises the trio.
The final book is Cackles Rescue. In between the five books launching, a colouring-in book will be published to complement the series.
"Hopefully all books will be out by Christmas time. It's very exciting and I think the books are a learning experience for children because the situations the chooks get in are very realistic."
As a proud grandmother herself, Fiona loves interacting with kids and getting the whole family involved in reading. She's had plenty of feedback from her own grandchildren prior to publishing the books.
Saturday's launch will start at 2pm with readings, competitions, prizes, plenty of surprises and fun activities in store for all who attend.
Those who are unable to make it are encouraged to submit their names and emails in a box so Fiona can inform locals when each book hits the market.
"I think these books give cooks a voice. I love kids and I love seeing them enjoying themselves and just having a fun time."
Everyone is invited to attend the launch at the library on Saturday and support Fiona as a local author.
