Awarded annually, the Whitley Awards are presented for outstanding publications that profile the unique wildlife of the Australasian region.
The book 'Faunaverse wildlife in poetry Tasmania' is the second book in the Faunaverse series from Coolatai authors Alexander and Jane Dudley.
It features 25 poems about Tasmania's fascinating fauna, profiling well known species such as the Tasmanian Devil, Wombats and Echidnas, and includes lesser known creatures such as Velvet Worms and Eastern Quolls.
The poems provide insight into the ecology and adaptations of the animals, written in a humorous and engaging style and are illustrated with stunning photographs.
This book has broad appeal to everyone with an interest in Tasmanian wildlife and will engage children and adults alike.
Alexander Dudley is an experienced zoologist and environmental educator, with an extra special passion for weird and wonderful creatures including invertebrates, lizards and frogs.
He has a deep connection with Tasmania, having worked for the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service for the last 25 years as an interpretation ranger. He is the longest serving interpretation ranger in Tasmania.
He has lead countless guided walks, spotlighting tours, minibeast safaris and environmental games with children and adults alike, inspiring them to love and look after our planet. He has also worked as a wildlife guide and zoologist in many other regions of Australia, particularly in Kakadu and the Top End.
Jane Dudley is an amateur natural historian with a passion for environmental education. The Faunaverse wildlife in poetry series came about after Jane was inspired to harness the power of Alexander's deep ecological knowledge, quirky poetry and stunning photography to inspire and delight Australians to know, love and work together to protect our unique and often endangered wildlife.
So far two books have been created: Faunaverse Australian wildlife in poetry, and Faunaverse wildlife In poetry Tasmania. Jane is more a songwriter than a poet and loves creating educational wildlife songs, and also loves turning the Faunaverse poetry into videos.
The film 'Wombat Droppings' won the People's Choice Award at the 2019 Cradle Mountain Film Festival. This poem features in Faunavere wildlife in poetry Tasmania.
