During the Sapphire City Festival last year, Inverell Red Cross had a stall at one of the open gardens where money was raised.
Inverell Red Cross treasurer Junette Peasley said Melbourne Cup Day was another opportunity for the group to raise money and awareness of the drought.
"Overall we raised enough money to purchase IGA vouchers and we asked Geoff Mill from Rural Financial Counselling Service NSW if he could distribute the vouchers to rural people in need.
"All the local money that was raised at these functions was distributed in vouchers through Geoff to drought-affected people for Christmas."
Inverell Red Cross has around 40 members. Each year the group hosts street stalls for Easter, Mother's Day, Red Cross Day to raise money for local initiatives.
A core group of members also knit trauma teddies, distributed to the local hospital, ambulance, medical centres, women's refuge and this year even fire fighters took a few teddies for young ones impacted by bushfires.
"We would like to thank everyone who supported and donated their time and money to this worthy cause. The farmers are doing it tough during this time."
The active group welcomes new members to join the Inverell Red Cross. If you would be interested contact 0427 293 812. The group meet monthly at the senior citizen's centre.
