Inverell Shire Council deputy mayor Anthony Michael said the council was continuing to monitor developments and assess any potential impact on the community and delivery of services.
Cr Michael said given the current climate, community safety was paramount and he urged residents to observe recommended protocols such as social distancing to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
"Because this is a rapidly changing situation, we ask for your support and if you are unwell, please stay at home," he said.
"If you need to access businesses, do that by phone rather than in person, or ask our local businesses, who are offering additional services such as phone ordering, home delivery and contactless pick up."
Cr Michael says following announcements from the Prime Minister, Inverell Library has closed to the public however, staff will continue to offer loans and library services such as Virtual Storytime on Facebook and a new 'Click and Collect' service.
"As of close of business Wednesday, Inverell Library will not be open to the public, however, we have introduced new systems so residents can still borrow items and reserve titles over the phone or online."
Members will be advised once collections are available and how items can be collected.
"We will continue to communicate with the community as this situation evolves and if there are any changes to Council services," Cr Michael said.
Facilities which remain open, but with social distancing and/or other restrictions, include Council Administration Centre in Otho Street and the Visitor Information Centre, while all shire landfills also remain open.
Ashford and Inverell public pools have also closed following government advice, while Council's essential services including water, sewer and waste continue to operate as normal.
The deputy mayor added council would update its website and social media platforms with information on facilities and services as required.
