With the coronavirus pandemic reducing events that can be held, Australia's greatest horse race offers one of the few opportunities for service clubs to fundraise.
The local Rotary Club has already seen its annual book sale and golf day cancelled this year as restrictions were placed on gatherings.
So that we can maintain their support of charities, Rotary is now encouraging people to support its Melbourne Cup Sweep, with tickets being sold in the CBD this month.
Tickets will be on sale outside Smooth Beauty, 126 Byron Street on each Thursday and Saturday of October from 9am to midday. Tickets will sell for $2 each. The ticker sellers will write out all tickets to comply with COVID 19 directions.
Tickets for horses will be drawn on Thursday evening, October 29, and winners will be notified by telephone.
The prizes will be 50 per cent of the funds collected and first place will be 40 per cent of the pool, second place will be 30 per cent of the pool, third place will be 20 per cent of the pool and the last horse past the post with a jockey on its back will be 10 per cent.
The Rotary Club of Inverell has been in existence since 1937 and has raised funds consistently since that date.
All funds raised by Rotary go to the charities and there are no administration fees involved.
