Students were placed throughout the community; the Legacy office and op shop, Red Shield Family Store, Meals on Wheels, IDFS Kindamindi, Inverell Shire Council, McLean, and Brighter Access to name a few. 

They also held a fundraising carwash and sausage sizzle at Beaurepaires on Byron Street. 

The Year 12 students elect a charity each year and this year the funds were to go to cancer support. Year 12 advisor Karen Witherdin, who toted a bucket and sponge alongside the students at the carwash said, “They’re giving a third to the Cancer Council, a third to the men’s prostate group in Inverell and a third to (Inverell) Women’s Breast Cancer group.

“They feel they’ve received a lot growing up in Inverell, and so this is their way of saying ‘thank you’ to the community, and hope they’re leaving something positive behind,” Karen said.

It is a day in a year of many activities and events the students have invested time and care toward their goals.

Student Brittany Hawkins is one of three presidents of the Year 12 charity committee and on site at the carwash. She was happy with the turnout of students on the day. “We’ve had a lot of good feedback. I think everybody’s happy to help out help out charity.”

Matilda Watters, Britt Turner-Conley and Stacey Layton volunteered at the Legacy op-shop and had a terrific time finding treasures to buy as they sorted clothing but also gained some insight into the shop. “We met some lovely people,” Matilda said. 

“The ladies do a lot of work back here,” Stacey said.

“You don’t even realise how much they do,” agreed Britt.

To top off the day, Wednesday night was the Year 12 Charity Showcase Night in another bid to raise funds. Inverell High School acting deputy principal Dayne Rosolen said events included HSC drama and music performances, some skits poking fun at teachers, games and an auction and Dayne said, “It’s all good fun.” 

As a result that fun and all of their fundraising activities, the Year 12 students have raised $12,000 to date.
