Mayor Paul Harmon said council had requested the drawings from its consultants to give members of the community a clearer picture of the proposed upgrade.
“It’s a continuing part of the community consultation and a follow up from the public meeting when several people said it would be helpful to have some graphics to help them visualise what the changes might look like ,” he said.
“Our consultants offered us drawings as part of our contract and I believe they really do show in some detail how the centre median strips will enhance the streetscape.”
Cr Harmon said the plan had been discussed by the TCRP Steering Committee which had made its recommendations to the Civil and Environmental Services Committee which met earlier this month. The council received 122 submissions in response to the public exhibition of the draft plan and Cr Harmon said all the issues raised were being considered and would be put in a report to council’s ordinary meeting in June.
“Councillors have also received an electronic copy of each of the submissions.
“On behalf of council I would particularly like to thank all the community members on the steering committee for the time and commitment they have so willingly given to this time consuming process.”
The mayor said the sketches illustrated the way the median strip would provide shade from the mature pin oaks and amenity for people crossing the street.
“We have been assured that similar strips to these have been very effective for traffic calming in other towns where they have been introduced,” he said.
“I would urge people to come to the administration office or log onto our website and have a look at the drawings.”
He emphasised the need for Inverell to renew its CBD to maintain its competitive edge.
“We have worked hard over the years to upgrade our sporting and other infrastructure and want to build on the good work already undertaken the CBD,” he said.
“We need to have a plan and work within our annual budget to ensure our town offers the best possible environment for the community, our business owners and retailers into the future.”
He encouraged people to monitor the council’s website www.inverell.nsw.gov.au where all details of the progress of the TCRP are posted.
