English and history teacher at Macintyre High School Lisa Woolcott organised the working bee, and said the students worked at the units every second Tuesday until 11am.
“We’ve been helping re-pot the plants, tidying up, throwing out; just tidying up the gardens in general,” Lisa said. She said the work was planned during the first and second terms.
“So it would probably be about 10 weeks we’ve been doing this,” Lisa said.
“This is our first year volunteering at the units.
“Last year we helped set up the trays for Legacy Week, but this week we just wanted to extend our help just a little bit further.
“This year, Lyn suggested there was a little bit of gardening to do here, and the kids absolutely jumped at the chance. They’ve been getting quite dirty and they’ve been working quite solidly.”
Office co-ordinator for Inverell Legacy, Lyn Kitawal, said the students had been very helpful.
“It’s good to have them come and do the gardening,” Lyn said.
“It was definitely good to have them last year for the badge week. It made it a lot easier for us.”
Lyn said the work done on the gardens by the students was very much appreciated by the residents, many of whom were unable to do the work.
“It just makes it a bit brighter for them if there are garden beds around and they don’t have to do it themselves,” Lyn said.
