The result could be a town-wide museum of Inverell history.
“It’s an Inverell Chamber of Commerce promotion to support the Kurrajong Re-enactment march,” Inverell resident Peter Lowe said. Peter has been instrumental in the creation of the permanent Kurrajong display outside the Kurrajong Room at the Inverell RSM Club.
He recently joined forces with Inverell Times staff Lisa Hilton and Felicity Reeves in the installation of historical Inverell images in the club.
He said he and the Chamber are encouraging all Inverell businesses, Chamber-members or not, to engage in the spirit of the time and honour the Kurrajongs.
“Ask them to put some sort of display in to re-create the time; that era,” Peter said.
“The idea is that maybe some businesses could research the history of that business, they might be able to research the history of that building that they’re in.
Local sleuths are invited to dig deeper into the past before 1916, and Peter said displays might reach right up to the present day.
He said Debby and Ian Hooker of Shabu had an idea for their salon, which they operate from a former house.
“They don’t have a lot of history, but they could do hair styles throughout the ages, so that would be good,” he said.
Another option is for a business to sponsor and display the images and history of Inverell’s Kurrajongs and World War I soldiers or nurses.
Peter said he and chamber promotions committee members Josh McPhee and Susan Ticehurst plan to collate all the information and create a permanent piece, such as a book, to document the history gathered for the future.
The display promotion is planned from January 4-15, 2016.
