WITH the beach as common as chainsaws in the desert hereabouts, you would probably be justified in feeling just a little surprised to learn that players from Inverell Volleyball took on the best in the Australia Day Beach Volleyball Tournament at Nobby’s Beach in Newcastle.

Kate Gersbach and Tiffanie Jones competed in the Women’s A Pairs and managed to bring home a second place, after really pushing the local Newcastle team they played in the final.
Paul Jones teamed up with his brother Michael (from Newcastle) in the Men’s A Pairs, but they were unfortunate to miss out on the finals.
President of Inverell Volleyball Adrian Gersbach said considering the Inverell club had only been up and running again for the last year, the results were very pleasing.
“The three players who went down to the event were well received,” Gersbach said.
“The club’s been going really well. Generally we’ve had 13 to 15 people turn up every week, with numbers increasing to about 25 on some weeks, which is really good.
“We’re trying to increase numbers and get juniors in this year, that’s our aim.”
Gersbach said Inverell Volleyball was looking to compete in both indoor and beach volleyball tournaments throughout the year in the men’s, women’s and junior divisions.
“We’ve got an under 15s tournament coming up in Sydney in April, for those who are interested,” he said.
“Obviously Sydney’s a long way away, but if we can get a team sorted, I think they will go pretty well.”
Closer to home, players will head to Coffs Harbour to compete in the Coffs Harbour Mixed Beach Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, February 13.
“It should be a good tournament,” Gersbach said, then chuckled.
“I think we’ll have our work cut out for us, there’s not a lot of beach around Inverell, so we’re at a bit of a disadvantage there, but we’ll try of course.”
