The third annual event, all three grades were pleased to help the town celebrate Indigenous culture, but president Gary Lavender said when it came down to it, the games were business as usual.
The Inverell ladies had a definitive win, smashing Moree with a score of 22-0.
“The girls have really come along. The coach Simon Green is doing a good job with them,” Lavender said.
While they were low on numbers, Lavender said the girls maintained good rotation on the bench.
The men could not replicate the women’s strong performance, with both A Grade and Reserve teams unable to grasp a win.
“It's always tough when you go and play the Boomerangs, they're a good side,” Lavender said.
Moree challenged the Hawks from the first whistle in the A Grade, with a fast game right from the start. Inverell struggled to keep up, with Moree leading 40-22 at one point.
“They don't need much motivation, the Boomies, to get an edge on an opponent,” Lavender said.
The Hawks managed to scrape themselves together for a more reasonable six point loss in the end, with 40-34 to the Boomerangs.
Reserve grade also struggled against the home team, suffering their first loss of the season. The team lost out by only two points, with a 34-32 finish. A few injuries caught the Inverell team out, and Lavender hoped the loss might be the wake up call needed to keep them from complacency before the finals.
With only four games left to go, A Grade is in a strong position, third on the ladder. Lavender said it all hangs on next weekend’s Ashford game, the Roosters currently second on the ladder.
