Fitting in with the theme and purpose behind the week, what activities would you like to see happen locally?
The Inverell/Tingha NAIDOC Committee is reaching out to community members for new ideas to boost interest and participation.
The committee would like to hear ideas from a wide range of community members that can be held before, during or after the official week.
Chairperson Lyn Lackay said pre-planning stages for this year’s NAIDOC Week have commenced with a few ideas involving women, sport and youth in the mix.
“The NAIDOC march is always a big one so it’ll happen again this year and we hope to organise a game of touch footy with local police officers.
“But we want to get all of the community involved- Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community members,” she said.
Forms have been distributed around town asking for locals to jot down their ideas on paper for the committee to collect.
They can be found at Armajun Aboriginal Health Service, Anaiwan LALC, the Linking Together Centre, Inverell Shire Council, the library, the Rural Outreach and Support Service and the BEST Community Shed shop in Otho Street.
“We will put together a calendar closer to the week because there will be a few different events in the wider district like Tingha and Ashford.”
This year will also see the return of the NAIDOC Week Awards and nominations will be open for all categories.
The awards recognise the brightest stars, elders, leaders, mentors, employees, sportspeople and youth within the Aboriginal community and the non-Aboriginal resident who has gone the extra mile to build bridges and support across culture.
“Nomination forms will be distributed in the next week or so, we’d like to see a lot of nominations this year.
“It would also be really nice to have the shops involved to have them decorate their windows or do their shops up during the week.”
Anyone interested in getting involved in the huge week of events that celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Indigenous Australian’s, can attend the meeting next Wednesday at Armajun starting at 4pm.
