The events include youth cooking classes, an introductory course in Computer Aided Design and an opportunity to try indoor sports.
Mayor Paul Harmon says the events offer something for the fitness fanatics through to those with a flair for science and technology.
“We’re delighted to have chef Karen Whitton on board to lead the cooking class on January 23, where the kids will be learning sweet and savoury recipes and also take home their creations”.
“The team at Inverell InSports Arena are also helping us host a come and try event on 18 January for children aged 8-12 to try indoor sports including cricket, volleyball, netball and soccer”.
Cr Harmon says with many households feeling the strain of Christmas expenses, he expects many families will welcome the free events.
“Last year, Council hosted sixteen youth events, which saw more than 3,000 young people involved in the likes of first aid training, a careers expo, colour run and movie nights in villages throughout the shire”.
“The support of the NSW Government meant we were able to offer all of these events for free”.
“It’s terrific to see young people in our area get out and support these events which are helping them stay active, connect with likeminded kids and even provide a springboard into a job”.
Local drafting and building designer Andrew Blake will lead a two-day short course in Computer Aided Design, better known as CAD.
A foundation skill for careers in engineering, architecture, design and construction, the introductory course is aimed at youth 14 years – 20 years and will be held 15-16 January.
“Once students complete the 2 day introduction, they will be familiar with the AutoCAD software which is transferable to a range of workplaces and they will be able to produce simple 2D drawings with dimensions and text”, Mr Blake said.
No prior experience is necessary and the two-day course includes lunch and snacks.
Cr Harmon urges youth to register for the events as soon as possible by calling Council 6728 8288 or visiting www.inverell.nsw.gov.au/events and downloading a registration form.
