The gates will be dedicated to Karim Michael and his son Paul Michael for their years of service to the Inverell Hawks.
Leanne Michael is Karim’s daughter and said the dedication is a great tribute to her family.
“They were heavily involved in the league over the years, so it was a really big honour for both of them. Especially dad. He was a life-member of the club and had a certificate of merit from Country Rugby League as well.”
The Michael family lost Karim last year when he passed away on April 8, Easter Sunday.
Karim Michael was a gatekeeper for the club for many years, put in extra time during group 19 finals, was a passionate fund-raiser, match-day official and supported his team with a passion.
Paul Michael was a league player early on, and Hawks club secretary for a number of years. He lost his life at only 31 in 1993 and was secretary at that time.
Vice-president Darrel Kachel said Karim set an example when it came to his loyalty to the club.
“It was his life, I believe. He was there a long time before I ever became involved and I’ve been involved about 20 years.
“He just lived for rugby league-especially the Inverell Hawks. The passion was unreal.”
Darrell thought Karim’s involvement spanned about 52 years.
The family commitment was so extraordinary, Darrel said the Hawks wanted to do something to pay respects.
“Our committee originally put in an introductory letter suggesting that in some way we might be able to honour the Michael family because Varley Oval is the home of senior rugby league.”
Darrel said council approached all involved sporting groups, resulting in a unanimous decision.
“What I’ve been told by from the representative from the sports council, it was cut and dried ‘cause they all went that way.”
Inverell mayor Paul Harmon knew both men and was happy to announce that both men would be remembered.
“They’ll be called the Paul and Karim Michael Memorial Gates,” Cr Harmon said.
