Have a Night Off will be a free community event on March 27 featuring performances by multi-award winning singer-songwriter Luke O’Shea along with Paul Grierson and Chris Rieger of Simply Bushed.
The night will start with a free barbecue from 6.30pm. The evening at Nullamanna is one of several shows planned for the New England North West region.
Luke O’Shea, who won three Golden Guitars at January’s Country Music Awards of Australia, is pleased that the concept has gotten off the ground.
“We’ve been looking to do something like this since early last year and are really pleased that it’s become a reality,” Luke said.
“We know it’s been a tough couple of years for lots of people and this is one way we can show people a good time, give them a chance to take time out and get together with friends and family for a bit of fun.”
The event forms part of the Australian Government’s drought assistance packages social support measures for drought-affected areas.
Local organisations The Ascent Group, Anglicare Northern Inland and the Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW have been working together with communities in the region to design community events as part of the initiative. Drought Support Services will be on hand on the evening to distribute information and answer questions.
Peter Westbrook, Ascent Group CEO, encouraged locals to enjoy the day, while finding out some useful information about the free services available to them.
“Rural communities are generally strong and resilient, and while that’s a great thing, it can make asking for support more difficult or embarrassing if you’re not travelling so well. If you’re stressed out, talking to someone and getting some objective input can be really helpful.”
Mr Westbrook said it was also a time to think of others who would enjoy the night.
“Ask someone you haven’t seen for a while to come to the event with you – they may be at home stressed and struggling, and you can help to change that,” he said.
