He replaced Ivan Spyrdz, who was promoted to Cricket NSW general manager of game development.
Szumowski has served as the North Coast development manager for the past six years, based in Coffs Harbour. From 2005 to 2008 he helped develop the sport in France.
He studied sports management at Southern Cross University in Lismore and then moved overseas for seven years.
‘‘I decided to stay in France, and if I was going to keep the blood pumping I needed to stay involved in cricket,’’ he said.
‘‘I googled ‘cricket in France’ and found out there was a whole European organisation aligned with the ICC.
‘‘I got an interview and became the national coach, and helped take them from eighth to fifth in Europe.’’
He said Cricket NSW wants to make Newcastle the best region in northern NSW.
