Holy Trinity union players Darcy Brennan, 12, Reuben Perceval, 11 and Charlie Moses, 12 agreed that there is nothing like rugby union.
“It’s good fun. I’m a bit sick of travelling, but it’s good fun,” Charlie said.
The Holy Trinity rugby union side cleared out the other seven teams at their regional gala day in Tamworth, earning them a ticket to state.
They travelled to the NSW Catholic Primary Schools rugby union knockout on August 10 at Hunter’s Hill with a total of nine teams, the best CPS from the state.
“When you turn up and you see the side, it gives you a little bit of butterflies, and just before running on, leading the boys on, you think ‘Oh geez, I’ve got to do well’,” Reuben said.
Despite the butterflies, the 10-a-side Inverell team mowed their way through three pool games to the semis.
Then they met Singleton.
“And lost, four tries to one,” Reuben said.
The boys said Campbell Watchirs scored the try for them, but their opposition had one player that flummoxed the Holy Trinity team with his ability.
“He just ran around us, he was just so quick, he was on us on the fence, he could just run any of us down,” Reuben said. “He was big, very tall and strong.”
Reuben said overall, the Sydney knockouts were tougher than Tamworth.
“Tamworth was at our level, and once we got to Sydney, it was a much harder, tougher level, which was ok, because we did lots of training.”
The boys agreed the level of ability was a step up from playing the regional schools. “And it’s more consistent throughout the team, because in Tamworth, there were star players, but in Sydney there weren’t as much,” Charlie said.
