CONNECTION of life to land is key to the 2016 July 3-10 NAIDOC Week theme ‘Songlines: The living narrative of our nation’, and Inverell’s NAIDOC committee is preparing for the annual event.

The committee with representatives from education to healthcare, support services and citizens, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal meets every fortnight to plan happenings within the community.
Inverell schools will hold their annual official flag-raising observations, and Inverell High will hold its special awards assembly on June 30 to recognise outstanding Aboriginal students.
Tingha is holding their official street march and morning tea on Monday, July 4. Outdoor activities will follow at Old Bottom. The day will start at 10.30am and travel from the BEST Access Centre to Anaiwan LALC.
Danthonia community hold their annual lunch to honour Aboriginal elders and weave culture and community together on Tuesday, July 5.
The Inverell main event and awards presentation is on Friday, July 8 with the street march from Campbell Park to Victoria Park.
The awards will follow the flag raising, speeches, the Aboriginal dance troupe.
Live music and food will follow.
The park, as in years past, will be replete with stalls from services across the district and activities for families and children. Awards as in years past recognise the community’s male and female Elders, youth, volunteer, sports, commitment and dedication both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, and the Aunt May Yarrowyck Award for the outstanding individual within community.
This year, the committee is interested in any new ideas to mark NAIDOC week. The next fortnightly meeting is 10.30am this Thursday, May 26, at Armajun.
