“I am stoked about the win,” said coach and St Philomena’s School Moree sport coordinator Tony O’Donnell.
The local school fielded two teams on the day, years five and six. Both went up against Moree Public School and Holy Trinity at Inverell, with the year six team beating Inverell 15-10 at the grand finals and rising as champions of the day.
“It was a great result, that has the boys happy,” said O’Donnell.
O’Donnell continued to praise the boy’s teamwork, remarking that it was the first time they had played as a St Philomena’s School unit.
“These boys would be playing sport with each other outside of school, so they had that sense of familiarity with each other coming into the game.”
O’Donnell said many players showed their merits: Angus Reardon for his tackling and presence on the field, Arthur Greer for his hard ball running and Jahleel Duncan for his agility.

“The team showed great commitment to the game and sportsmanship. Our combinations were good.”
While O’Donnell is happy with the result, he said there were some aspects that needed to be worked on in the lead-up to the next round.
“I’ll be looking to improve their fitness and defense.”
The regional competition will be hosted at Tamworth sometime during the next school term.
“It will be a lot more difficult, as it’s a bigger carnival. The boys will be playing the winners from around a larger area,” said O’Donnell.
The winners of the round will go on to play at Sydney, with a game held before a Waratah’s match.
“It’ll be tough competition, but it’s possible to win,” said O’Donnell.
